Don't take a lock. You will not be tempted to leave your cycle out of sight

Sounds stupid, but dont just put your lock through the front wheel, especially if you have QR wheels. It takes seconds to remove the bike from the wheel. Ive seen it happen.

The best lock in the world won't stop some idiot jumping up and down on your bike!

(I've seen many securely-locked bikes which have been badly vandalised.)

Which is a good reason to follow my advice (sorry state of affairs sisn't it  )

Ride a scratched up old bike with dropped handlebars, and if you must leave it in a public place, try to leave it next to more desirable machinery.

Ride a fixed wheel

Maybe in the provinces, but not true in London any more, fixeds get nicked as much as any other bike.

I don't really lock mine up as I'm lucky that I never have to leave it anywhere insecure or out of sight for more than a few minutes.
