Up until a couple of weeks ago it was commando for me.

Then I tried a pair of these:

Excellent. No discomfort at all on a 75 mile hilly ride which had hot sun and rain that got me soaked through. Also a long flat ride (60 miles) that was very hot, during which I don't think I got off the saddle more than 2 or 3 times. No soreness at all.

They're not cheap but they are very comfortable.

Find the concept of wearing anything in between my scruttocks and the pad in my shorts quite bizarre. Can only lead to chafing and crotch rot

I've never used padded shorts.
