I was in the process of replacing the sealed bottom bracket on my MTB. I had removed the cranks and saw this. I then tried to remove the cup but it would not budge. Firstly what is it and can it be removed, and secondly is it stopping me removing the cup. Or is the cup done up so tight, (like the crank nuts) that it is going to take some effort.
Thanks for any replies.

Looks like it's a mount for your front derailleur, could have another use as well as the bolt holes suggest, maybe to fix a chain guard/case? Rather an odd arrangement as there seems to be no way to adjust the height.
The cup should release it.
