do need one - after all, if something has been bashing it to the extent that it's broken then it's done its job in protecting the chainset behind it.

OK, it's a minefield. It seems the bash-guards I have seen online are intended to replace one of the chain rings (going from three to two). The one I have goes over (i.e. attaches to) the third one and is, apparently, merely to protect clothing from oily chain.
Maybe so, but I want to replace it because a)
something knocked it off b) I just want to.
I contacted Scott (the manufacturer of the bike) and they will not deal with me directly but asked that I get a LBS to ring "Madison" and source one from them.
