what's this bit of my pedal that has come loose?

I fitted a pair of V8 pedals last weekend and yesterday I noticed a strange sound coming from them. I had a look and it seems there is a washer or something that is not actually attached to the pedals. Is this correct?

Hmm it's a washer of sort. I doubt it's a sealed pedal so clean the pedal, clean the insert, stick some super glue on it, and shove it back............

It's a 'basic' pedal, so don't worry.............. but put it back or your pedal will fall to bits a fair bit earlier............i.e. very soon.........

Thanks for the quick reply. They are brand new pedals though, not even done 100 miles and bits are falling off? I wonder if I should just send them back for a new pair?

I think they are DMR V8s, what came loose is the (push fit) dust shield. You can see how they are fitted on the pedal shaft here (in silver). If they are damaged then replacements are available. But since your pedals while new are already falling apart, if I were you I would contact the supplier.

As others say, take them back. These padals aren't the best but they are OK and they should stay in one piece for a year or two before they collapse.

Having said that, if you can keep the gunge out they last well. A mate gave me some similar ones that he'd beaten the hell out of until the bearings packed up. I replaced the bearings and relubed them and they are doing sterling service on the commuter. I saw him a while back and he was admiring my bike and saying "I used to have some pedals like that". No, you used to have *those pedals*. He was chuffed to see them doing a job. On an MTB turned pub bike they are ideal as you don't need special shoes and they don't get slippery in the rain.

No he wasn't. He was really hacked off, and the first chance he gets he's going to push you off your bike, you mark my words.
