Iban Mayo went up the Ventoux at 14mph for the 21km climb which was a record. Twice as fast as me but he was fuelled by EPO and I was suffering a slight hangover otherwise......

I believe the record for the Alpe d'Huez is Pantani's and is around 14mph too. It will take a long time to be beaten probably, as we seem to have moved out of the age of EPO.

RD, I looked at the results of that Ventoux ride of Mayo's in the D-L and the other main players that day were Armstrong, Hamilton, Landis and Rasmussen! Need I say more

When I did AdH I was more concerned about beating Sheryl Crow's time than Pantani's!

Averagesover 10 miles, 30mph means about 33-35 most of the way, but in a road race the speed on flat can be over 40 when the pressure is on, which is why Gordon can produce a sustained speed for the 10 miles, as he has the strength gained from all that pressure riding.

Ah, the F12z/10 course, I believe. It's only 9.7 miles so you could claim he didn't quite crack 30mph ;-) That is a terrific time for that course though. For an average speed of 30mph in a 10 you would 'only' need to be hovering between 30-31 to make up for the standing start/turn. 33-35mph is a different league and more Wiggins territory.

i had a chance to go for a spin/hill climb on turbo bikes at tcr show in esher a month ago. next to me happened to be a sprinter/time trialist capable of 20min 10-miler. his average over 7 minutes was 412w, mine 308w.. it was quite interesting to compare. elite riders should average around 500w then?

Only the very best in the world would kick out 500W (Cancellera) for a sustained period. A home-based Elite rider wouldn't typically get figures that high. It does vary significantly depending on body mass. I very much doubt I was kicking out 400W when I did a sub 20 min 10....probably more like 350ish W. A bigger rider may need to be closer to 400W for the same result. Over 300W is a decent effort, wherever your mass though.

Remember there is a lot of flat stages were the peleton rides along easily at 30 mph though.

PELOTON!!!! Easy to remember for the non-French speakers, two wheels on a bike=2 O's.

Interesting you think that on a flat stage the peloton rides "easily" at 30mph (48kph). Not at the front, you don't.
And not all the way, either, often races can start quite steadily once the break gets established, then the last 50km can be high in the 50's to 60kph on the flat as they get closed down. Which is why the domestiques can finish minutes down once their job is done!
