What's the shelf-life of a jar of home-made chutney?

My guess is that three and a half years is pushing it a bit. What does it smell like? If it smells like chutney and hasn't got stuff growing on it, and doesn't leap out at you when you take the top off, it's almost certainly OK.

I think.

OR....send it to the MOD. They may like to use it as a form of chemical warfare
Porton Down,Chutney Warfare Division presumably? My Mother, who is an occasional chutney eater, upon my Fathers death(he loved the stuff)discovered 11 jars of chutney secreted away!Quite why we never discovered, but they are, were, of the wartime generation and as a result have an entirely different approach to life in general.Anyway,as you approached the jar,you could hear the chutney trying to push the lid off the jar.Powerful stuff, one teaspoon of that and my average is 20 mph,for obvious reasons!

Vinegary foods like chutney will last for years Rich, it will be fine if a bit thickened. I found some home-made pickled onions that are six years old - they are so strong they're like munching chillies!
When I find food that is 6 years old it goes in the bin . It has never entered my head to actually put it in my mouth .

It's 32 minutes since Rich last posted. Shall I call for an ambulance?

Olives in brine, jam, picked anything, tinned tomatoes, tomato pure - as long as the original seals and the tins have not been opened/damaged/exposed to extreme sunlight or heat, those are examples of foods safe to eat after 6 years.

The possibility of sitting on the toilet the next day shitting through the eye of a needle . That's the reason not to bother eating food that is 6 years old ^_^
