What's the clicking?

After some advice of things to check.

I've noticed I'm getting a random occassional click from the bike. Sounds like a small metallic clunk (like you'd get if you lightly hit the frame (aluminium) with a spanner.

Last time I had something like this it was the chain - but I've thoroughly checked that aftert cleaning it at the weekend. I wondered if it might be crank related - but have also heard the noise whilst not pedalling.

It only seems to occur when a) first setting off on a ride or b) when I move the bike from side to side. Other info - it started when I took off the QR wheels and put them back on again.

Not much to go on, I know - but anyone have any advice on where to look for issues/problems?

Do you have a bike computer that uses a wheel magnet?
If you do make sure it is not too close to the sensor, I had a similar issue after slightly knocking the magnet which only occurred when getting out of the saddle.

If the noise started after removing/replacing your wheels have you tried removing/replacing them again just in case one isn't absolutely seated correctly. Otherwise our old friend Mr Sheldon Brown has advice on tracking down odd noises. http://sheldonbrown.com/creaks.html
I haven't taken them off completely - just loosened the spindle, spun them a little, pushed down on the bike (with the wheels on the ground) and retightened. No change.

It could be that you've very slightly altered the position of the wheel/s relative to the brakes and as you're flexing the wheels (which you'll do when you're setting off or rocking the bike from side to side) one of the pads is touching part of the wheel. Tho' to be fair that's not likely to be a metallic noise.

As above, take the wheels off and replace them, with the bike upside down so you know they're properly in place, then make sure there's enough clearance between rim and brake (allowing for a bit of flex).

As also said above, the wheel magnet is a distinct possibility as well.
