It will usually give u a distance and average slighty less than actual
So its not accurate.;)
Even over the same segment, it can recorded it as different distances and if this is done in the same time as previous one for example
It records two times of say 60's but recording distance on the second one is slightly longer than the first it will show this as a new p.b. as you have covered a slightly long distance in the same time hence a faster avg speed, but the segment is set at two precise points, therefor its in accurate.
It's just a bit of fun.
The best way to mark your improvements is over time and to record as accurately as possible the distance and time, over time this will so your improvements, as overtime you will ride the same roads over and over again in all conditions and you as the rider in different states of fitness, there by giving a more accurate indication of your improvements.

Its as accurate as i need , within 1 % of my bike comp reading .

Well I do between 800-1000 miles a month (usually the lower) so a max 1% error would be 8 miles a month x 12 or 96 miles a year, I am looking at doing 12,000 miles in my first 18 months of riding so going off that sort of figure, I think you get the idea.
Strava is just a bit of fun, mind so are most of them, pure gps recordings just are not accurate enough, there are too many minor errors.

Endomondo user here. Very simple to use and compare rides etc. I know quite a few who swear by Strava due to it's competitive nature. As stated above, I use Endomondo for my ride then upload the ride details to my Strava account on my laptop. Get the best of both worlds that way.

I use Strava and am fairly happy with it. Most of the cycle club I ride with also use it so it's good to compare how we all ride. I am thinking of trying a Garmin too though, (which you can upload to Strava anyway). I think you can get too bogged down with the technicalities of how these things work. I would just say try them and see which one you prefer then stick to that one, as then the form of measurement will be relatively consistent at least?

This is why I have my own spreadsheet, raw data taken from the garmin, but elevation corrected using rwgps, as that is what I start using, so it's consistent over all my rides, it is generally a little higher than the unit, but as the unit can report a difference of up to a 100ft between gain and loss, I have at least something to compare elevation gain using the same data.
This is a monthly summary (well part of it), and as you can see my avg speed has increased gradually since I started, this is in all weathers over various rides ect.... as I say the elevation may be a little high due to errors in rwgps data, but it's as close as any I can find garmin connect if corrected is usually even higher.
Also because of the terrain around here the avg ft/mile doesn't vary very much.

I kinda like walkmeter, as I walk too, you can change activities, and on Facebook it builds up your efforts on a weekly basis. I have also used BikeBrain too, that seems pretty good. I think I will download Endomondo and see if it works OK on IOS. Need to make a final decision soon, I just want something that's reasonably accurate >1% is good enough for me, I am more keen on cals, and logging a ride, naming it, and seeing if I can improve on it next time. For road and MTB.

You seem to be a bit OCD on recording your mileage so strava maybe not for you but I would say garmin not going to be 100 % accurate either and how accurate is a bike computer?

Within 1% is not going to make a difference to 99.9% of users .

What do you use to record ? .

I use a garmin 500 with a speed sensor, that measures a know wheel circumference.
Doc's have never said I have O.C.D.
I use strava just for a bit of fun, which is what it's meant to be.
For the record I follow a number of local cyclists of a similar performance to myself, and have that as my default table, much more interesting than look at a table where you are 123 out of 189, and much more motivating as it is something you can work on improving.

Does strava tell you over your headphones how far you have cycled during your ride?

That's one of my favourite things about endomondo. I like hearing every mile and how fast I have went. Pretty much my main motivator to see if I can beat the next mile. Nearly broke the 3 min mile this morning for the first time so will be trying to beat it on Saturday when I'm back out

I would find that really irritating, just a personal thing, as each mile you do is different from any other. If you want to try strava download a tcx from endomondo and upload that to strava.
Well done on your time.

Actually for running I like that feature on Endomondo but to be honest I cannot be arsed to download from Endomondo in a tcx file so I can then upload to Strava so currently Strava is the only app I use for both cycling and running.

Ok go try running up a 1,000ft hill, and see what strava says you've climbed, I bet its nowhere near a 1,000ft.
