What's so special about 3/4 length cycling shorts?

Been wearing my running shorts over some thermals for the cold mornings, but soon it will be too warm for the thermals.

I don't want any tight lycra shorts, and my running shorts show off too much leg if I wear them without the thermals (don't want to distract the female road users). So I thought I'd look at 3/4 length shorts but they seem to be around £50 on online cycle shops. What do you get for £50? That's quite a lot just for shorts. Is there anything special about cycling ones?
I was just thinking this morning about how comfy my Endura Humvee 3/4 shorts were this morning as I was getting changed, and how long they're lasting. About 4 years so far, with no signs of wear at all. They've got much tougher material in the crotchular area, and a couple of zipped mesh bits to increase wind-flow.

3/4 are better on your knees when it's cold, and they're fine all through the summer anyway.
Did the Mercia in Motion ride yesterday and wore 3/4 bib shorts. It was chilly first thing, and there was a north easterly blowing which kept things cool.
The good thing about 3/4 bibs is that they keep you that bit warmer but you don't start to overheat as you can in full length tights. think about the health of your knees in the cold and exposed possibly for several hours, it just keeps them that bit warmer.

So you'd say they're worth the money?

My Campag 3/4 heritage bib tights are for the summer, I have no desire to where shorts, (in public).

If you think £50 is a little steep how about these from Tenn's sister outlet cycle-clothes. They also do them unpadded for a quid less. I find their bib shorts and tights (though I notice they don't have any bib leggings at the moment) good quality and fit.
