get strava running on your phone or buy a garmin 200 and GET RIDING ;)
I have Strava AND Mapmyride instaled on my Android. Haven't used Strava as yet but did use MMR on my 2nd short outing. Overall, very impressed with it so far.
Might give them both a whirl next time out just to see which one works out best. Which would you stick with?

I use my Garmin edge 200. For me ride time is phone free time. Usually in flight mode and tucked into my saddle bag. I check it when we stop for a breather etc

Re: clothing.

Have mooched around a few bike shops over the last couple of months and tbh some of the kit prices are taking the mick.

I tend to buy well buy once and am fussy with my climbing and hiking kit. Nonetheless there are some great bargains to be found and some items easily crossover into the cycling world eg wicking tops.

Last year I managed to find Helly Hansen Lifa tops dirt cheap. These are high wicking cool in summer warm in winter tops and usually retail at around £20. Bought 3 long sleeve and 3 short sleeve for £66 all in. These are pretty much unbeatable base layers and I have climbed in them for years. Great biking wear as they are tight fit. I still wear 2 earlier versions that I bought late 90's.

Odlo (Norwegian I think) make great mesh tops that for hot summer activities I have yet to find anything that beats them. Slightly looser fit but on admittedly rare hot days there is nothing cooler imo. Bought 8 in various colours year before last for £12 each. These literally last forever and I have a couple that I bought when I lived in the South and I have been in the Lakes 15 years now.

Btw I live in a part of the country where it is pretty normal to wear 'outdoor' kit all the time hence the amount of this stuff that I buy.

Most of my gear is running/hiking/football stuff. Have some excellent light weight wind/shower proof jackets which might not be as snug fitting as cycle ones but do the job well enough for me and 1/3 of the price of the equivalent bike ones. As layers I have thermal hiking tops and if that isn't enough I have loads of winter football training tops which you can pick up cheap and are really excellent and don't get heavy in the rain.
