I looked in the phone book last night and sure enough, this guy's not in it but my number, and address is the only one with this area code!

I know it sound paranoid but it's the helplessness and not knowing. It's such an abhorrent thing to have your name associated with, it's horrible to think that some people might think that of you.

I'm going to take Noodly's advice and talk to the fuzz. Might not do anything but just to talk to someone at least might make me feel better.

I know a lad got badly beaten up in a pub one night as his assailant confused him with someone else who had a similar name and had once had a relationship with his underage sister.
yes, that will reassure Mr Pig!

Seriously, I think it depends how unusual your name is. If it is something common sounding like Dave Tomkins, then people will realise there are several. If your name is Archibald Ptolemey McNibbler then people may well assume you are the guilty party

If it's any help I just tried to find the news story on BBC, Scotsman and a variety of fairly complicated Google searches and failed to uncover it.....

I've not had a problem with the same name, although in my hometown there's apparently a guy who is my spitting image. Enough so that my own mum once spoke to him thinking it was me. Let's hope he behaves himself!

Apparently he's wishing you had:evil:

My advice as an ex-plod would be to give the local Inspector a phone and tell her/him you are a bit concerned for the reasons you have mentioned. I am sure she/he will be sympathetic and the local cops can be made aware of the concerns and be briefed on the circumstances.

Sensible advice IMO

Oh, god, have I got to change my name?

Seriously Mr Pig, I'm not surprised you are a bit concerned - there are some very stupid people out there. Well, there are a few in here, TBH...

In the meantime it might be a good idea to stay away from play parks, creches, ice cream vans and the like.

Ha ha ha :0)

It's quite sad though, the things you need to think about these days. You find yourself not doing perfectly innocent things just in case some busybody watching makes something of it. When I was a kid just about everyone's mother would come out with an embarrassing picture of them in the bath, usually when you took your first girlfriend home! ;0) I wouldn't dream of taking a picture of one of my kids in the bath for fear of being accused of being a perv! And when my little girl has friends round for sleepovers I stay well out of the way, I just let my wife deal with them. It's really sad but that's just how you think these days, what if. The world's not a nice place.

My cousin went off on one for a year or so because she thought she'd seen me getting out of Eurostar at Liverpool Street and apparently I ignored her.

My brother in the USA has the same name as a notorious child-molester who is all over the news.

On the news the other night they were talking about Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge. They killed people who wore glasses because they thought they might be intellectuals! Kinda puts my worries into perspective.
