I rode only MTB for 21 years; my fitness was adequate. Then I got a road bike that was good enough for me to enjoy it and become serious and my fitness went into a different stratosphere; my resting heart rate dropped from 52 to 48 and on the rare occasions when I ride the MTB I am now much faster. My greatest regret is that I didn't start road riding 20 years ago as I'd have done much better at the MTB races and Polaris events I did during those years.
On an MTB you don't really train; you stop, mess around, fall off, stop for mechanicals and punctures then end up in the pub. The best road bike training I did was last year when I rode to Southport and back, about 50 miles of flat, fast steady and consistent riding. After recovering I felt fantastic.
