Assuming your club is British Cycling registered, they should be able to give you advice. If you're serious, find a coach. If your club doesn't have one, they may be able to recommend someone.

If you are 16 now, you can apply for a Junior licence. As a complete novice, it will be J4 (4th cat junior). This will get you into any race open to 4th cats. Bear in mind that even when riding against seniors, the 52x14 maximum gear still applies. As has been said, get a coacgh and take advice from experienced road racing members of your club. there's a lot to learn besides the fitness, like etiquette, correct cornering, and how to ride in bunches without being a danger to yourself and others. Plus lots of other stuff. Best of luck!!
