No offence but I can't believe someone mentioned a notebook. lol
Of course a notebook and a pencil of course. You need to make a note of the number of the vehicle that just nearly killed you or threatened you. Or where that dangerous pothole is to report later. Those random thoughts that you forget at the end of the ride. The number of that beautiful person that you met on the ride who insists that you meet again. Oh yes you need your notebook.

- good thinking - now it makes sense! Actually I often carry a digital camera for pothole recording duty. (edit: Would come in useful for beautiful people too, but haven't had the good fortune as yet......)

You never explained what these are for? ;)

Notebook and pen - to write down my distance and time (bit OTT for a beginner but it pleases me!). I always used to carry them in my rucksack as well when I was out walking ............... never used them!

Joan if you haven't already got one, get a wee computer put on your bike. They are great, mine does speed, distance, average time per mile and also has a clock on it. I would be lost without it ;)

And the notebook has my name and address in it just in case I fall off my bike in the wilds of civilisation and someone comes across my dead body. At least they will know who it is!

I had good advice from Peanut but not followed it yet. Put a sticker on your bike with details like that on it also on your mobile phone I think he said? ;)
