Its maybe been said, if your mileage is not high clean and lube the cable/mech/shifter. If it still slips re index. If it still slips replace the cables and if it still slips replace the chain/cassette but hopefully cleaning and lubing will sort it out.

I personally wouldn't spend anything on it. Put it towards a new bike.
Although Halfords are shite, they do sell some really good bikes. Just don't let them build it for you!

What budget have you got for a new bike?

Unfortunatly not spending anything on it is not an option as I rely on my bike to get to work. I have got a bike fund that I put into should be up around £600 by now so I can by something decent just finding that bike

With mine you could hear it click every 6th turn of the pedal as stiff link caught
