I have a TomTom in the car and find it very good. I'm riding LeJog this summer and was thinking about getting a mobile phone which could run TomTom and using this as my Sat Nav. From what I've been shown TomTom works exatly the same on a phone as it does on a Sat Nav device. One major benefi being one only has one device to worry about, charge up, lose etc.

Any thoughts?

I've been reading around this subject as I'm planning to get a GPS of some description sometime soon. Issues with mobile phone based systems seem to include battery life, waterproofness, screen brightness/contrast not good enough for use "on the move"

At the moment I'm leaning towards etrex Legend HCx rather than one of the bike specific models.

Not wanting to plug a "competitor" forum, but there is a LOT about GPS over at yacf.co.uk, you may want to have a look?

Garmin's eTrex models suffer with the vibration ( jitter switch off ) when mounted on a bike.
Their rubber trim comes unstuck and floppy/loose in hot weather.

I had one, which had to go back, and the replacement did just the same.

I used Nokia Sportstracker on my old N73 with Bluetooth GPS Receiver, that worked great as cycle computer and track logger. The version I had before I killed the phone didn't do waypoint navigation though.

Sporttracks is the best analysis program I have found for after rides. And Google Earth too.

You can do offroad nav with most GPS devices via waypoints/routes/tracks electronic compass type.

Modern GPS enabled phones and PDAs can have topographical maps installed, nav via waypoints again but with maps too.

Sat Nav devices 'know' where the roads are and offer turn directions etc.

Most in car Sat Navs can be unlocked to install Windows based software to do all of the above.

I have a Garmin Edge 305, I have yet to use it for navigation or for the training centre programmes but I really like the device. Combined with Sporttracks it's a winner.

I have also just bought a HP Sat Nav that's unlocked and I've yet to fully play with that.

Good luck with that. I've got the 205, which is exactly the same as the 305 but without the cadence/heart rate monitor, and the navigation function is 'basic' to say the least. I love mine but it's only used as a standard cycle computer...speed, time, distance etc. On the other hand the training centre is pretty good to keep track of your performances and stats.
