Oldfentiger

Veteran
Location
Pendle, Lancs
Gonna chuck the Raleigh RX Comp in the mix.
I bought mine last November, and it continues to impress me every time I ride it.
The matt metallicy satiny paint looks refreshingly different to the mainstream.
Frame is stiff and responsive. Feels like a quality bike.
SRAM drivetrain is excellent.
Mechanical disc brakes work fine every time I ask them to.

RRP is £999
I got mine for £800 (end of season offer)

Racing is tough, but because you're grouped into ages instead of ability you could be in the same field as national or even world champions. It's good fun though although I'm a member of the 'party at the back' rather than 'race at the front'. It'll also improve your bike handling skills no end. Remember this: a cross bike makes a decent road bike but a road bike makes a rubbish cross bike ;).

I've had a couple of TCX SLR2's over the last 18 months or so. The first had experienced a split down tube that was replaced under warranty by Giant (very swiftly and without question so kudos to them). I sold the replacement bike after only 4 months.

The reason for this is down to the TRP Spyre brake calipers. They are absolutely rubbish after the first few hundred miles and I never felt any confidence in them, especially in the wet or on a steep descent. I tried all manner of different pads, rotors & cables in the hope of improving performance without success (and at great cost!). I thought it was maybe just the original brakes either being faulty or not set up right but the replacement bike was exactly the same after a short period of time. I bedded the brakes in correctly on both occasions but after the initial cable stretch they just don't feel the same and no manner of adjustments can get them feeling right again.

I purchased a Cannondale Synapse with Hydraulic Disc Brakes in March and the difference between the hydraulic brakes and the Spyre's is like night and day. I wouldn't bother ever going back to cable disc brakes ever again.

For this reason I cannot recommend the TCX SLR2. I'm also not a fan of the lower end Boardman bikes either. I do plan on getting another Cross bike in September but this time I'm going for the Cube Cross Race Pro. £1100, decent spec plus able to take mudguards for commuting if that's your thing.
