Smart 35 Lux Front and 1/2 watt rear ?
The 35 Lux is about as good as a Hope 1 on low setting... which for something running off two AA batteries is not half bad. Pretty lighweight too.
Wouldn't be my main light on an unlit country lane, but a pretty good light for most urban commuting.
At that price you could almost get two sets in your budget.....

Thanks for all the advice, have gone for this set from wiggle, £24.75 (extra 10% at the moment using code "extra10")
Most of my commute is on lit roads, only a very small section on poorly lit road, but as its cycle lane only, then I'll see how this one goes. Can't be worse than what I'm using at the moment, as long as I can vaguely see if I'm going to run over a patch of nails / broken glass then it'll do fine.

Don't expect to be out and about too far from home, or on the unlit roads of the countryside, when it's dark, so this set sounds perfect, and at this price, (hopefully) a bargain.

I have a problem on the fixie now as someone half inched my two front lights that run on 18650 batteries.

Have setup a magicshine front and the spare cree torch...also a flashing led from the 99p shop.Never removed my lights before as they were bolted on,but my luck has run out due to some moron.

Rear lights aren't a problem, easily removeable but I have limited space on the front handlebars.

The magicshine will be a trail tommorow as it's unpredicatble how long the battery pack will last.Any ideas?

Im looking for a solution.

Suppose I should be happy the bike is ok,im not really bothered about the nicked lights, just the fact that I can't put new ones back on without them being nicked again.

Normally about 3 hours on the maximum settings, a lot longer on a lower settings

I've ordered one of these Chinese cree 5. Will let you know how it goes if you're interested.
You have to be careful, they might be rated at 200 + lumens but according to the specs on the manufacturers website with AAA the max you will get is about 110 lumens., still good for the money.
The quoted max lumen in a spot is so small it would be unusable as a bike light .

My magicshine on last usage was,how long is a piece of string,in how long will they last,no way was it three hours.Have more than one battery pack to try...also ordered cree lamp brackets for the handlebars.

Was just looking at those, but if 3aaa's fit then thats fatter than an 18650 battery.Means the torch is fatter than my old lights which means it is probably no good for the use of aaa's when I have coped for so long using 18650 batteries.what cyberknight said aaa's are a waste of time,18650's are more powerful.

Oh yeah, thanks for your help, cyberknight,it was a silly question though.

Hmmm...never thought to check that, but at under £7.50 I won't cry if it doesn't work. I'll just use it as a dog walking torch instead ^_^

I really like the B&M Ixon. Runs on AA's, puts out 40lux and has a really sensible light pattern. Probably not enough for offroad, but plenty for road riding.

Nah I had two cree's and they were compact,as I say I had no problem with the 18650 batteries and always had a spare.Enough for a full commute.Ordered a handlebar mount or two, will find a way of fitting to of the.Always found the two effective. My magicshine front light has homebuilt battery packs but they just don't seem as effective apart from the battery pack for the rear light.Working on that one.

The thing that strikes me about my nicked lights is that there is no way the thief would know they were 18650 batteries in unless they know their stuff,(I would have probably taken the lamps for having for AA batteries as well) so it may be a wasted effort. If they were any good, the thief would need the proper charger, which,if the thief is so desperate would probably not want to splash out for the special charging unit,so,useless unless they already had a charger.

I arsed about buying various different front lights, basically trying to get something for nothing, before taking the plunge (and a very deep breath) and buying a Lupine Tesla 5, very lightweight, nice and compact, battery seems to last for ever and good spread of light. Rear lights I can recommend the Smart Superflash range. Remember to aboid rear ligths that take coin cell sor any other battery than AAA's these are by far and away the cheapest batteries to buy for rear lights.

Jeezuz, I have really got to stop replying to threads when I'm on night shift

What I meant to say was " Remember to avoid rear lights that take coin cells or any other battery than AAAs"

I'll go and stand in the corner now :o)
