You might want to consider a windproof top. I went out last winter wearing a fleece top which would have been fine if I was walking but the wind went straight through it on the bike and I was frozen when I got back. I'd also recommend gloves. They'll save your palms if you fall off and absorb some of the vibration through the handlebars.

I think this is just great. It brought a smile to my face ;)

Thanks again for all the advice. It's nice to go on a forum where everyone seems genuinely to be positive and helpful. So far I got some baggy padded shorts for obvious reasons (Endura Humvee - couldn't face lycra I'm afraid) plus a multitool and puncture kit and a Topeak Wedge bag to put them in. I can see how addictive this can get unless you are VERY careful :becool:

I don't leave home without my cycling glasses. Even when it's not sunny, they protect you from low flying beasties.

Take a spare tube, pump, allen keys, wind up lights, mobile phone, water bottle. Fit a carrier rather that carry a rucksack.

Definitely carry a set of allen keys as well as the other items mentioned. Last weekend I was riding a forest MTB track full of twists, turns, dips and jumps and ended up twisting my handlebars. If I hadn't had the allen keys with me to re-align and tighten them I'd have had a very long and uncomfortable walk back to the visitor centre

I use this clip-on saddle bag to carry spare tube, puncture repair kit and allen keys, and a quick release handlebar bag to carry purse, phone, waterproof jacket, snacks etc whilst out riding.

Other essentials are gloves (I use fingerless atm), padded shorts, base top and windproof/waterproof hi-vis jacket.

Almost forgot the most important thing - a helmet!!!
