One more piece of advice, borrowed from Ray Mears.
Knowledge weighs nothing. It takes up no space in your luggage.
Be sure you know how to fix a flat tyre, or that you are riding with someone who can. And that between you, you have the means to fix it. Be aware that different bikes have different tyre valves, so not all pumps necessarily fit all tyres.
Learn how to make simple adjustments to your bike. Things like adjusting the gear selector or the brakes if they are rubbing. Know how to put a chain back on without covering yourself in oil, and that sort of thing. There is a great satisfaction in being able to fix even simple issues, so they do not have to spoil your ride, or cut it short.
