What is this noise?

Had my bike serviced just before Crimbo. Since then, had nothing but trouble. I originally took it in because the back brake cable (along the frame) was really loose. Got it back and it was still the same, so did it myself.

Now, I notice a strange noise coming from the back wheel, freewheel/hub area. I can only hear it when freewheeling or when I clean and grease it and spin the wheel - like a clicking/squeeking sound BUT NOT the usual freewheel click click. Seems worse in the wet.

Any ideas?

I'm going to take it back anyway because definately not impressed with the £40 charge for the 'service' which only included a wash and grease up and some new front brake pads. Would just like a few ideas as I'm mechnically-minded-deficient. Thanks

I thought that Lee - which has annoyed me since the lad in the shop said they check them all and replace where necessary.

*cough* Hateleys, RT - on the Stafford Road? I have used them before. Not much experience or expertese with bikes above £150 imo, and I don't mean that in a snobby way. But I've known the owner since I was a kid and like to support their family business.

Thanks a lot Lee. They shut at 5pm so I can't really get it there in time. Riding it seems fine, it's just if I back pedal (in the house as I can't hear it over noise outside) that it's apparent.

No grinding in this area love.

<bows down>

I am not worthy! Thanks a lot for your help Lee, really appreciate it!

Simple stuff first.

Do you have a wheel reflector and is it tight and straight.
Are all the spokes tight, non-broken.
Have you changes the inner tube recently, might be some grit in there.
Does it run free of the brakes.
Is the rim smooth, no dints to catch.
The brake or gear cable is not bent towards and catching the spokes is it.
Does it happen if you take the wheel off, hold the spindle and spin it.

Check them first.

The noise is definately coming from the freewheel/hub area. There is nothing catching on the wheel. I have left it at home today as not entirely happy with riding it.

Will ring the LBS and get it back in. Thanks Crackle.

if you are backpedaling the wheel shouldn't go round unless you're fixed of course.:becool:

If the noise is being made when you backpedal but the wheel is not turning then it is a problem with the freehub.
It may be that you have lost one of your pawls or the retaining spring is broke or simply the freehub body is grinding on the hub .
You need to strip the freehub to take a looksee.

I bet the shop didn't bother. They probably couldn't hear the noise above all the racket and din of a shop during the day

lol, I don't think I'm explaining myself well.

Imagine - I get off the bike and turn the pedals lifting the back wheel. When the pedals stop the freewheel (?) is still moving and making the usual click click noise BUT there is another kind 'not quite right' noise also.

So also imagine, I'm perched at some lights, holding onto a barrier and just back pedalling - I can hear the noise then too - if I try really hard cos of traffic etc.

I don't think the LBS checked because they couldn't be arsed. Fred Williams next time me thinks.

yes that is what I said isn't it ? if you are stationary then the wheel is also yes? if you backpedal then it is only the freehub moving relative to the stationary wheel hub. Therefore it is a problem specific to the freehub because nothing else is moving except the pedals, chainset, BB axle ,chain ie the transmission components.

BUT..... when you lift the bike pedal then stop not only is the freehub moving but your wheel is also so .That brings into question your wheel bearings also.

What your LBS has done is sprayed some lube onto your freewheel and some has got inside and in doing so it has made the grease thinner (or even washed some of it out) and some small bits of grit got washed in there. But the down side to this is that trying to find out what they have done for shore and to do that the freewheel needs to come off as there will be some of the lube around.

But get it back there and tell them what you think.
