What is this bike?

Nope, that comes across as rude. No matter how basic, it may have had some work done on it with care and been on some adventures. Not all bikes are identical interchangeable commodities to their owners.

It really depends on the person reading the message as to whether it comes across as rude or not. Luckily I wasn't addressing my comments to you because the stolen bike is nothing to do with you.

I probably should have just PM'ed the chap instead of putting it up on the thread, to avoid other people whose voice doesn't count taking unnecessary offence. BB

I feel you probably should have just left it in your brain because I doubt many people who have just had a bike stolen would like being PMed that it was cheap, a crap bike and no big loss.

Pretty much the same as the above reply.

Staying relevant and committed to your firm etiquette, then.

It does actually help to give people this sort of information because then they might make a better choice of product next time around. There is absolutely no doubt that plenty of readers thought "oh well, crap bike anyway" but instead of being honest everyone resorted to this simpering type of response. You could be encouraging the victim to choose a nicer bike but instead you perpetuate the myth in their mind that what they had is worth getting again.

Think, goddamnit.

A nicer bike in whose eyes?
That bike probably meant a lot to the owner. So what if it's not a top of the range one?
My old bike was an ancient Raleigh Vixen - not a ''nice bike'' in your eyes but till I got the one I use now,it was my pride and joy,we went everywhere together and I loved it.

This picture is lacking an ashtray full of "spliff" ends and a few tins of Special Brew lying about! Notice how they've lowered the saddle to chav requirements.
