I was looking for a way to describe hill climb TTs to a friend....and figured that hill climbing, and cycling in general is about inflicting the maximum amount of pain on ones self, sometimes for no apparent reason....but what is the word for somebody who inflicts pain upon themselves? Not looking for flagent.

if it were for some form of gratification it would be 'masochist' but if for no 'reason' I don;t know....

Flagellation common with some fanatical religious orders and those with sexual perversions - yes/no?

Would masochist be the word you are searching for?

Cyclists aren't masochists, well I'm not. If you think so then get fitter. Aren't all sportsmen and women then masochists by your logic?
The reason dear boy is to win or complete the ride which is the goal not pain itself and certainly not to inflict any more pain on oneself than is necessary AFAIK, unless of course, you like pain for the sake of pain in which case you are indeed a masochist. Masochists like to be friends with sadists and vice versa I believe ;).

Yes but when you are TTing....or even better, attacking, you are launching yourself into a whole world of pain. You have to kind of make yourself enjoy the painful feeling (linking it to winning etc)

No not really, one is riding harder, faster to gain a quicker time and a higher place not to inflict pain on one self IMHO. The fact that it's painful is a given but then there's no gain without pain as they say. If that's how you view your TTing, competitive cycling then just get on your turbo trainer in your garage and have Mrs M whip you ;).

i guess masochist is the word im looking for....but maybe im using it in the wrong context

But what i mean is.... you are belting along, legs wanting to drop off, lungs ripping out...if you have the choice of hurting a bit more to go a little faster or hurt less and taking it easier....you will choose to hurt more.

No, you ease off, stop and lie on the ground for half an hour and then eat a pie ;).

No of course you pedal faster and harder not to hurt yourself but to hurt the riders trying to beat you. If when you pass the finish line you don't vomit you haven't been trying hard enough.

Count von Masoch wrote about what became known as masochism - the experience of pain in search of pleasure. He also led a cricket tour to Austria. 'Nuff said.
