its the endless need for shiny stuff ;-) but seriously if you start off on a clunker the fitter you get the higher you set your own goals and develop a +1 disease ;-)

Does anyone have any advice regarding which road bikes to compare. I have no experience on this subject and have a budget of around £600?

Giant Defy 4 or 3 if in budget

Look at ashcycles site for deals on the 2012 models

Might be worth visiting Ribble in Preston too

I did say "I" it was just my opinion. I dare say everyone has had bad experiences with all manufacturers just comes across alot that Vickster likes to hammer Specialized for some reason ? Im yet to have a bad experience with them. Each to there own though.

I presume you realise you've left a nought off your quoted budget? Mind you, £600 would get a half decent pair of wheels I suppose.

What is it that makes cycling so addictive and the current bike is never enough. I feel the need to get myself a road bike since doing some training on the roads and hills. Just need to do the hard work now and tell SWMBO my plans

I believe it is called consumerism.

I don't have an issue with Specialized in terms of the quality of the product, just that they look as boring as hell to me, overpriced for the componetry and every other bike on the road is a Specialized - I like to own something that pleases me aesthetically and is a bit more individualised. I also like to support UK companies. I have had 3 of their bikes and no technical issues with any...They just appeal to me not a jot now...

If you read my post, I did not only mention Specialized, but all 3 of the big US brands that are widely available in the UK...

I like my Giant!

Not sure I agree with your statement that "the current bike is never enough". Actually I am lying - I definitely don't agree.

I have no upgradeitis in me for most things in life. I tend to (over) research thoroughly before I buy and then buy exactly what I think I need and then I'm happy to stick with it ad-infinitum.

On a deeper note (cor blimey!) I think that there is a lot of unhappiness in this world caused by clever marketeers stimulating consumers to always want something bigger, faster, sexier or just plain better.

There's a recent thread somewhere on here where someone said (loosely paraphrasing) that a CAAD10 is £300 better than a CAAD8 as that is the price differential - think about that and you'll see what a funny old world we live in.
