Ok
i hate wearing hats or caps and my other half is giving me grief about getting a cycling helmet
I understand the reasons to wearing them however i dont like them
expect a few people here have had the same thoughts as me maybe dont wear them anyway
so what do you guys wear and how much have you paid for them?

Don't get caught up in the cost, and go for a few basics...

The helmet should fit and be comfortable or t will become an annoyance.

Do not buy mail order unless you are sure it will fit and be comfortable. A visit to a good LBS is worthwhile.

Round, smooth helmets with few harp points etc are considered safer by some authorities

Look at the standards that it passes. The EN1078 required for UK sale is virtually worthless, ideally go for one that is Snell cetified as this is considered the toughest test to pass.

Budget - set and stick to it. The £160 pound helmets will have passed the same tests as some £30 ones.

After that it is down to you there is a whole range out there........

I have a Spiuk Nexion and a Met Inferno - both of which were bought over the internet and neither of which were tried on before purchase. These days I wear the Spiuk more than the Met,although the Met has slightly more room in the shell, which makes it easier for wearing either a cap or a head cover under it in winter.. Helmets are mandatory for racing, so if you compete, you might as well wear one for training as well. The only time I don't wear one is if I am just going out for a recovery spin on some very quiet local country lanes.

Providing you buy the right size, almost any helmet will 'fit' - but some will obviously feel better than others.

The higher the price the lighter they get but you are talking small margins, also they will sell the higher price ones on better airflow on to your head.

Think long and hard before you take the leap. I rode for six months without a Helmet and under pressure from Family and Work firends I gave in. Now I do not feel right without it and always crosses my mind when I think about not wearing it that that day will be the sods law day. I am still not convinced of the effectiveness, but I am complying with public opinion and I dont like that :-(

Another thing is - don't forget to wash the insides out  you'd be surprised how minging they get with a sweaty head in them.

The Giro I have has anti bac replaceable internal sponge strips, cost me £9 for the replacements set and only had to buy it because I had lost one and the velcro was a really annoying!

I went 12 months without doing much to the helmet and it never smelt!

I have a giro Monza which was about 40 quid iirc. It's light and comfy and reasonably cool

Maybe i've just got a sweaty head then

Mine doesn't have replaceable pads but every few weeks i shower with it and leave it to dry. Seems to work well enough.

(And no, I don't wear it :P)

+1 Pointed helmets can cause serious rotational injuries to your neck, even at low speeds.

I wear a white BMX helmet that I bought of Ebay for £16.90. It gets me noticed and will make it easier for me to calim compensation in the event of an accident, if nothing else.

Same here, except I rode for longer without one, until I met my OH and eventually bought one under pressure. Now I can't get on the bike without wearing the damn thing "just in case".

Mine desperately needs replacing now - it's over 5 years old and the pads have gone hard and the straps are stiff from repeated sweating/washing. I want a Specialized helmet but can't find anywhere convenient to get one here, so I think I'm going to have to buy online.
