Progress on the Viner 797 that I picked up last month:

The old rusty Tiagra 9 speed crankset is off, with a replacement ready to go on. However, there was insulating tape by the driveside tube - removing this exposed some scraped metal which I'll paint before putting the new crankset on. The cassette has been cleaned and onto a different pair of wheels. It's a 12-23 9 speed, so no low gears.

Also, the blackened rear Shimano 105 derailleur is now clean with replacement jockey wheels as the old ones were rusty and xx( .

I'd also debated what to do with the almost-new DT Swiss R460 wheels. They're not the lightest but are robust and, with the cassette off, I found it had an 11-speed hub which means they'll be useful for winter riding by son no. 2 or myself. So ... horrid Specialized Espoir tyres and tubes off and they went onto a used Fulcrum Racing 55 set I had stored away along with the cassette.

The next decision relates to handlebars and quill stem. They need changing; either for a silver set or a quill to A-head stem adaptor for some spare bars I have here.

Further work on the Vitus 797 I picked up last month;

- New Shimano jockey wheels on a rear derailleur that needed a LOT of cleaning
- Replacement Shimano 105 crankset for the rusty Tiagra 9-speed version. It's an 8-speed version but should do. It's silver rather than faded silver and rusty black chainrings.
- I've got the stem out (eventually) and there's a lovely chrome Nitto stem in. Just waiting for the new bars and I'll swap the components over for that. Inside of the forks were de-rusted and greased.
- Paint touch-up done. In the end I used some Honda Jazz pearl blue which Honda had sent instead of the purple SWMBO's Jazz is and they told me to keep it. It matched closest of all.

The front Ultegra derailleur has a wood screw in one adjuster instead of the proper Shimano one - :cursing: - so I'll sort that once I can remove it. I've also still got one stuck bottle cage bolt to remove, having got three out, so it's soaking and I'll have to find a way to remove that one.

Photos once the new bars are here, and on, with new bar tape.

Also, I got the CeramicSpeed bottom bracket out of the Merida Scultura, so that'll go on sale shortly. Liberal use of grease meant it came out far easier than expected given the external threads are stripped (I bought it with those gone). The bottom bracket will probably eventually end up in the Viner Mitus, which is my current smart turbo bike.

My commuter/winter bike is in the shop for a new BB, Headset and possibly a rear derailleur. So I prepped one of my other bikes 3 days ago it's tubeless tyre went soft after 2or 3 days so I topped up with more sealant and reseated the tyre. Most times it is simple no mess but today was the exact opposite. 6 hours later it still solid 🤞

My winter bike is in the lbs for a new BB, Headset and possibly a rear derailleur. Things I would have done in the past before chemo ravaged my fingers. So it was the first ride on my good bike and after getting the rear tyre to seat yesterday and despite all moving smoothly in the house yesterday under load (63kg) today something was making a loud noise like the brakes rubbing, although there wasn't any resistance in the wheels so it was back to the house for a quick lube of the crank arms and chain that seems to have sorted it for 50+ miles today. After which I needed to do a bit of cleaning despite the 100% of the ride being on tarmac and 99% being on road.

I have one as well. Cheese would be more effective. However, I've also got a useful Park Tools one.

We have a Park Tools pedal spanner that no matter how hard they try to break it remains intact and very usable. It looks like it's been through an industrial crusher but so far, after many years of misuse, has proved indestructible. I wish I could say that for the other tools we've got.

This morning I've finished touching up a myriad of paint chips on the Principia 700 - it turns out Halfords own light metallic blue touch up paint matches really well. All done and ready to be used if needed, or it'll be on sale when everything warms up.

I've also built the sack truck, adding grease, which will be needed for furniture moving - not by me - over the next couple of months. It arrived as a pile of bits with no assembly grease supplied. As long as it works it's £35 well spent. Only available in yellow:

Finally, more work on the Ridley Fenix SL. A pair of new Ultegra 8100 brakes are in, although I'll need a longer brake bolt for the front.

Also, I've added a crankset. It's a Rotor 3D-F model, which wasn't my first - or second - choice. The first choice FSA SL-K Carbon Light is a 386EVO which was too tight and I've got a Dura-Ace 9100 with broken power meter that could go in. However, both of these need the new Rotor 4130 bottom bracket changing, so I'll leave it as is for now and change it later: I've a BB86 Dura-Ace new bottom bracket I could use, or source one for the 386EVO crankset. I can't even remember where the Rotor crankset came from: it's just been in the parts shed for quite a few years sat in a box, so I might as well use it.

Shifters are Ultegra 8000 right-hand and Dura-Ace 9000 left-hand. Why? Well, I've a surplus of Ultegra 8000 RH ones and the same with Dura-Ace 9000 LH's. Longer-term I'd like to have some consistency so am looking for a Dura-Ace 9000/9001 right-hand shifter but it's not a priority.

The Superstar Components Pavé wheels with Pirelli Cinturato Velo tyres are off my Viner Mitus and the bottle cages are some Elite Vico carbon ones removed from the Raleigh SP Race last Spring when it was stripped down. Bars are Bontrager XXX aero carbon black/grey plus a Bontrager RXL stem, Fizik carbon seatpost and Fabric saddle all from the Merida Scultura. The saddle angle's temporary and it'll be some trial-and-error to get the fit right for my damaged right hand. I've also got a pair of Conti GP5000 AS TR tyres to go on at some point.

Pedals to go on shortly, then cables and a chain plus bar tape. I might have to get the cables / chain / tape done by my LBS as my right hand doesn't have that much strength yet. Hopefully it'll be all ready for when I'm back on a road bike in a few weeks' time.

Technically it's my new 'winter bike' but might see use throughout this year as I recover due to a more relaxed geometry than my road bikes. It also seems a bit much for winter-use only: normally I'm on a damaged frameset with parts found unwanted in the back of a box.

Dismantled the 1x1. Tomorrow I'll ship frame and fork back to the seller.
Bought the frame and fork from a member of another forum and the seller told me more than once that he regrets the sale. The 1x1 was more "want" than "need" for me, so why shouldn't I give it back?
Fun fact: Today he posted that he plans to build up a singlespeed mountain bike again.
Another fun fact: He doesn't know that the frame and the fork are on the way and will arrive tomorrow or on Wednesday. :giggle:

When tweaking the front disc true recently (Fettling 1) on the Gravel bike - I noticed a noise / something loose in the front wheel. Sounded like something pretty light moving freely between the walls of this twin-wall rim.

Tonight I brought it inside and whipped out the front wheel. I expected to remove the tyre and tube - and spin the wheel around until the valve hole was at the bottom [Rim tape still in place] and watch / hear something fall out…..

What actually happened was I removed the tyre and tube and could hear no noise anymore. I removed the tape to be sure. Spun it a few times, shook it, banged it sharply a couple of times….but no noise still. Whatever it was must have been small, light - and fell out soon after taking wheel / tyre / tube etc apart. (Fettling 2).

Job done either way. And still no idea what it was 😁
