That lot was despite having run a stick between the tyre & mudguard AND riding through any puddles I could find on the day to try to get rid of the worst of it as it was rubbing.
I discovered the problem mid-ride when I got off to see if my brakes were rubbing. I found a stick at the side of the road and scraped out as much as I could. The worn tyre lasted the rest of the ride but was scrapped shortly after that.

I'll be switching back to the slick commuter tyres again after the promised snow didn't hit Thursday/Friday last week. So glad I built a set of wheels at the start of 23, rather than swap tyres for the winter - I have the ice tyres on a cheap set of Decathlon wheels, the hand built wheels are used most. I've probably used the ice tyres for about 8 commutes all winter, rather than for 3 months solid (which is depressingly slow).

One of the little plastic washers has fallen off my commuter's canti brakes (they are literally just a cover) - all 4 had cracked (30 year old brakes), so I ordered a job lot of 'o'-rings for pennies, and replaced all the plastic washers with four o-rings. Much neater. Only 246 spare o-rings in the box !

Replaced damaged latex inner tube in the front wheel of the Stayer All Road and whilst at it cleaned front calliper and pads that was getting a bit noisy.

May give it a test tomorrow morning as I'd also like to see how the new front Supernova light angle is.

Straightened my gear hanger using a spare rear wheel.
Read the advice not to do it and thought I'd just screw the wheel in to check the alignment. Threw caution to the wind and now the shifting is much improved.
Let's hope I didn't live to regret it.

Replaced the centre mounting stand on the tourer with a rear mounting stand, to prevent Horizontal Bike Syndrome.

Poo: I've found my boot hits the stand occasionally; this is the trouble with 26" wheeled bikes. I've moved the stand as far back as I can and I'll see if I can live with it.

Of course using thumping great work boots doesn't help...

Cleaned the bike today and scratched my head wondering why I was getting the occasional 'clunk' while I was on the bike yesterday. Discovered there was play on the BB. It's square taper and I've got a bagful in the shed so swapped it out for one with no play. Seems fine (same width as the old one....110mm) and a short ride suggests it might have cured the clunk. Next proper ride is Thursday so keeping my fingers crossed.

My youngest is using my full-sus while I'm working on the Gary Fisher for him. Today he complained that the chain fell off (he wasn't sure). I told him to come with me, I'll show how to put the chain back on. Tried putting the chain on, and it won't go. What's the matter? Turns out the rear mech's plate is twisted, and the chain got stuck in it. I have no idea how could this happen - very strange. Anyway, the chain and the mech are off now. I'll probably replace the chain while at it, but not sure yet what to do with the mech - perhaps I can straighten the plate back, and use it some more. The shops are closed till Sunday, I have till then to try and bring it back, and if not, I'll buy a new one.

Washed my bike after a mucky outing.
Then the belt came off.
It has not been adjusted for ages.
Had to find the funny tool and the instructions to reinstall and adjust it.
Really don't get the Gates instructions about the belt resonating at a frequency.
We shall see

I tried to put it off until the vernal equinox, but the chain started slipping, so it was time to fettle the commuter.

Before:

After:

New large chainring, cassette, jockey wheels, chain, front tyre, and swapped front to rear.

What commuting every day does to your poor old bike:

And the chain wear:

Main problem was getting the new marathon 25 on. What a pig!

Eventually resorted to tyre levers, but severely regretted it - God's way of telling me my rim is worn, I guess...

Finally got it on my spare wheel, then the valve detached from the tube on inflation so had to do it again!

Off the LBS now to drop it off for a re-rim.

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
I've been mostly offline since Thursday when I woke up to a dead PC. Pulling the hard drive out of the old Zwift PC showed that was also dead, rather than the motherboard being faulty.

So ... new hard drives for both arrived and I'm back online, but have lost quite a few files that I hadn't backed up recently.

Bike wise I've been working on the Merida Cyclo-Cross; it's had a new chain and a crankset change along with a major clean. The Shimano original was 105-grade but 46/36 and I've been spinning out, so an old Ultegra 50/34 was installed with an adjustment to the front derailleur. All working, hopefully, and back to commuting next week.

Also, I've a nice pair of Spesh Elite shoes but the buckle broke a while back. I've been searching for an unobtainable buckle for a while without finding one, so this week bought a cheap pair of Spesh Elite shoes with the same buckle. The hardly used second-hand shoes in size 44 arrived for £9 and I've got a replacement buckle fitted. I'll put these back on sale for a fiver or so.
