If possible you want to be riding a lot more often than just once a week. As other have pointed out you need to get the miles in.

Get a pair of padded shorts and a good saddle and arse ache will be a thing of the past.

In addition to what Simon has said above I'd suggest you need to be at a higher mileage by April. My target each year is the Manchester 100 and I like to be up to feeling comfortable with 80-85 miles a month or so before the event. I'd suggest you need to be comfortable with riding 65 or more about six weeks before the event. Ideally you would have ridden the distance by then, knowing you can ride 80 miles is a big boost. By comfortable I mean you finish a ride and it hasn't hurt.

I think I need one now.

In The Times today there was an article about their photo editor who, yesterday, rode today's stage of The Tour de France. He is obviously an experienced cyclist but it nearly killed him!

Thanks to everyone who sent messages today. This is my first time on any forum. I never knew they were so friendly!

Bascially at the moment you just need to start doing longer rides. Whatever you are riding now, head out each weekend and ride a couple of miles further. It will start adding up. Then next year you can think about hills. Since it is flat, find the only hill, there always is one and ride up and down it - sorted !
