what has caused this tyre deformation?

Hi, this is the second tyre (first was the rear last summer now the front has done the same) that has deformed for what I see as no particular reason, I don't recall having any bumps or potholes with either tyre and it just appeared one day.
Both these tyres came on the bike from New, I replaced the rear with the same tyre and that has been ok since, maybe a poor batch or maybe the hot weather as it was last summer when it was really hot that the rear did it too.

Has anyone seen this before?

My Googling shows these are wire-bead tyres. Has the wire bead broken at the deformation point? Just a wild guess: I'm no expert .

have you inspected the rim/s with a magnifying glass for any minor defects?

Bad enough on the back but the front.
You may be right, bad batch. I don't think its the bead or the rim it looks more like the carcase.

Had 3 Mavic Aksions go the same way all within a 100 mile of new , I believe they are just rebadged Vittoria tyres , think I pinged a stone with one and it deformed like yours .

The tyre is splitting from inside. I had it happen once - the tyre looked fine from the outside, apart from the bulge, but one look inside persuaded me to scrap the tyre immediately - it was falling apart. I'm sure that it would have eventually burst.

That's one reason I won't buy any Vittoria tyre now. I've had that happen a few times on them, all with folders so nothing to do with a broken wire.

I've had that on Panaracer tyres, with no obvious cause.
It's the carcasse coming apart inside - could be from a cut, or could be a manufacturing defect.

Even if the tyre doesn't get worse, it wears through on the wiggly bit pretty quickly.

I've had this happen with a Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase, as others have said its breaking up inside, I've been on Hardcases for years and its only happened to one tyre.
