Are they a dying species? All I hear now is vegans with never any mentions of vegetarians. I am neither of these but I do wonder what the next breed is going to be.

Google says that there are 8.1 million people on a vegetarian diet in the UK, of whom about half are vegan.

That compares with just under 1 million worshipping members of the Church of England, for comparison.

Since I was told to go on a gluten free diet I have been looking at "free from" stuff and I have noticed that a lot of what COULD be vegetarian is modified to be vegan so they can tick 2 boxes

they often use the same thing to tick the gluten free box

for example if I want to go to Toby Carvery then I can - most of the stuff is gluten free
except the gravy
but it is OK because I can have the vegan gravy - which ticks 2 boxes with only one extra thing
I hate to think what that tastes like compared to the stuff my wife makes at home (or my Mum used to make which was similar!)

SO - basically most restaurants have done a vegan sub-menu and use that for vegetarians as well

Definitely not, when you consider how many vegetarian restaurants there are and how many ‘standard’ restaurants cater well for them too.

One of my favourites is Ranjit’s Kitchen, a superb little Panjab restaurant where everything is made freshly on the premises. The samosas are the best I’ve ever tried.

It’s not a posh place; long tables with bench seats mean you’ll likely be sitting with strangers, but oh my word, the food…

(I’m not veggie or vegan.)

Travelling and being vegetarian (not vegan and fine with eggs & dairy), India was the easiest country for sticking to vegetarian diet.

Peru had an interesting interpretation where you'd regularly get "sì vegetariano con pollo" (yes, vegetarian with chicken) - loads of restaurants consider chicken as vegetarian.

I gave up on meat about 6 months ago, but still eat fish and some acceptable seafood like prawns and scallops. I'm 6 foot tall and a mere just under 11 stones in weight. I gave up on meat more for animal cruelty reasons rather than personal health reasons, but I think I need some form of 'flesh' to keep my weight at a healthy level.

I've never understood the giving up meat but still eat fish thing. It is just meat of fish not meat of cow pig or chicken?

Well, write it down boy ......
I'm one who eats fish but not meat. In my case I stopped eating meat at the height of mad cow disease, so it was a health thing and also fish has much less bad fat. It's also easier to convince yourself that the fish has had a better life before being caught than an animal bred for the purpose.
