Garmin Edge 200. It does everything I'll ever need it to do, and does it easily and efficiently.

No need to spend anymore IMO unless you want sensors, in which case the Edge 500 is the answer.

Depends upon budget - I'd echo what everyone has said. Basic GPS then 200 or 500/510, the latter two taking HR and cadence. Something better, then 800 or 810. Or even the run off 605/705.

I've got a 200 for commuting - fit and forget, fast boot and GPS acquirement so ideal. 705 for longer rides - takes much longer to boot due to the software in it, so more ideal for training. Great for plotting new routes and exploring lanes.

A quick note about the edge 200.
I bought one recently, it seemed to be exactly what I wanted until I tried it out. Compared to a friends phone who I was riding with, the accuracy with pretty rubbish when uploaded to strava or similar sites. Turns out that although the GPS sensor in the 200 is just as good as any other garmin, it only records data when it detects a change on speed or direction. That could easily mean there's 20 seconds between two recorded points. We were doing some off road trails, and lots of the twists and turns had just been missed out.

So If you just want to know where you've been, or to follow a bread crumb trail, it's perfect. But if you want more accurate data, the 500 has the option to record every second. Takes much longer to boot up though. If strava is important for you, then I don't know how it would work with a GPS point recorded 10 seconds either side of the finish point.

I have used the 200 and my phone for a set training loop. They were both accurate to within 2s of each other. Never had an issue.

Recently Sold my 705 and upgraded to the 810. I'd echo what others have said and start with the 500 so you have the potential to add cadence and HR monitor to it at a later date.
