Once I had this boss who really disliked my cycling to work for some reason, or perhaps a variety of reasons. The company won an environmental award which meant we got a visit from some representative of the Queen- no idea who, but he got to carry a sword around.

On the day of the visit my bike was hidden away in a garage so that an old man with a sword wouldn't have to see a bicycle.

So that's kept me motivated for a good number of years.

I enjoyed working on cars until the day came when just about everything was self-lubricating, self-adjusting or controlled by a microchip. I then became interested in bicycle mechanics. There aren't many rules either, you can ride just about anything that you build. And it's a lot cheaper.

Only snag being that you end up with a bunch of bikes that you don't want to sell cos you built em DAMHIKT. :becool:

As a child it was independence, transport and the opportunity to do more with my free time, even if it was just riding to a mates.

As an adult, commuting and wanting a way to get exercise without cutting into my day.

Then cycle chat, buying a road bike and strava all got me to the point that I have ridden lejog , l2p, flanders, around europe and over most of the south east.

Was gardening one Saturday in Spring and my old mtb was perched up against the wall. Decided to stop gardening, get on the bike and go for a ride.

Necessity, last year, for hot wheels due to moving outside my university bubble, but Plymouth isn't big enough to force me to get a car.

Started off just commuting to work (having not cycled for a decade after smashing my writst), then discovered I was seeing far more of my town than I ever knew existed. Then I discovered my town has a bunch of 300ft+ hills and from there on in, I was sold. Changed my life, in a sentence.

When I moved to London, I bought a bike as I couldn't yet drive in the UK. I mainly used it to tool around town, 3-5 miles max, and the occasional hungover cycle as it made me feel better. Once I started driving, it sat mostly unused, except for cycling between venues where we had a next day load out I needed to supervise, with the bike being chucked into the back of the van at the end and my car at the end of the day.
Fast forward to this past autumn when my CBT expired and I couldn't ride my moped until I re-did the training. The buses where I lived at the time couldn't actually get me to work on time or sometimes ever, so I decided to cycle the 7 or so miles. I then bought a new MTB, continued cycling, commute became 16 miles, and just bought my first road bike. I will continue to cycle to and from work as long as the weather allows (as long as it isn't icy. The cold doesn't bother me). I'm also gearing up for my first charity ride of 65 miles
