What food at a cafe stop during a club ride

On a recent ride I took along two sandwiches made with Sesame and Linseed bread. I went like a train all day; can only assume it was the slow-release effect of the bread. Will try again soon.

Bacon butty or, if the cafe is Canal Central at Maesbury, a steak and onion butty. Ohhh, on a club ride... well I don't really do clubs.
 
Doing a 70 mile club ride with a cafe stop half way though. The club ride speed is an average of at least 20mph.

What sort of food would be a good choice to have at the cafe stop? Looking for something that would not sit too heavy on the stomach as I don't wish to feel nauseated for the remainder of the ride.

Also looking for something that will provide me with a good carbohydrate source to aid refuelling. Thinking that a sausage and egg sandwich would not be a good idea.

Does anyone know of any good articles on the web?

What are your tried and tested methods for refuelling?

Thats almost time trial pace, the best time I've done a 100 in is seven hours, and that was a long time ago.

It could perhaps be a very flat route, with a following wind, in which case average speed might be yet higher so 100 miles easily achievable in under 5 hours. Anyway cafe stops are for wimps ;) .

quite so, Crankers, and it's heartwarming to see you sticking up for old-fashioned values.

My question was born of idle interest. I used to go out with a BC club that covered 60+ miles in three hours. A cake stop midway would have been silly. Now I'm more likely to do 60+ miles with the one I love at something like 12mph, and a cup of tea and a slice of cake midway makes a morning of it.

Beans on toast is often recommended, being a good balance of protein and carb.

Personally, I opt for a slice of cake and a coffee. For me, the refuelling isn't just about the body's needs. I factor in the 'little of what you fancy does you good' rule and let my eyes (or is it stomach?) have a say. I like heavy stodgy cakes or the aforementioned bread pudding. I'm not riding that hard though so it's not essential for me to get it exactly right. Pretty much anything would work for me.

That said, I don't often stop at a cafe these days, not for refuelling anyway. I might stop for a break and have a coffee but I usually carry food on me.

I would not advise you eat too much at the cafe. If you're doing 20+ mph then the worst thing you can do is stock up on stodgy cake (in my experience - and trust me I can give you graphic detail on being dragged around a hilly Sussex route by the club fast man, whilst harbouring a gut full of bread pudding) because all it's gong to do is give your body something else to spend energy on.

I've done 70 mile rides at around 20 mph, but to be fair, I wouldn't describe them as club runs: more like hard hard hard training.

You must be very fit. Best of luck dude.
