What film did you watch last night?

Once were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band. Coming out of the Kino I would have given it nine out of ten with a few niggles. Over night and a glass of whiskey, the niggles had grown into full blown criticisms. A little less Robbie Robertson and a lot more of The Band would have improved it. It's not overly narcissistic or hagiographic but the story is a one-sided recounting through Bobbie Bobson's eyes (he has memoirs to sell) and that tends to suck the colour out of The Band and its other members.

Anyway, if you've got a taste for well-edited films and some full-fat Americana, there are worse ways to spend 100 minutes. Seven out of ten:

Battle Royale - 9/10

Brilliant in many ways, I always forget how absolutely mental it is somehow. Immensely violent, but also discusses some deep and difficult issues, without battering you around the head with them.

I read recently that it was potentially going to be remade or turned into a TV series. I really hope that doesn't happen, because I can't see either ending well.

I also read that the author of the Hunger Games books wasn't influenced by it at all, which is such an obvious lie.
Oh i dunno... two people are capable of independently having very similar ideas

I watched Stand Up Guys from 2012 last night, by myself. Everyone else had gone to sleep. Great cast. Christopher Walken, Al Pacino and Alan Arkin. It really was a great movie. It made me laugh out loud at times. It tugged at my heart at times. I really enjoyed it a lot. I hadn't heard about it before. The humor was right in line with my father's sense of humor, may he RIP. And I tend to have a similar sense of humor. If you have the chance, check it out.

Den Of Thieves.

A sort of Michael Mann-esque Heat type heist thriller, complete with cop v hood foot chase and shootout at the end.

It got off to a good start. Ex special forces operators pull off a highly profession heist. Gerard butler is Big Nick, an LA County Sheriffs detective on their tail.

Initially it's ok. Tightly orchestrated action, reasonable characterisation. However, by the second half it loses it's way- the plot becomes needlessly convoluted and we get so far deep into Big Nick's tortured character it detracts from everything else.

Not the worst film of its type, and Butler's and Pablo Schreiber's performances are decent enough, but not enough to overcome the difficult plot and they get lost in the noise towards the end.

5.5/10 - disappointing, but watchable...just.

Mamma Mia 2. The Mrs had it on. I wanted to shoot myself after 20 minutes. Settled for hitting the wine instead.

Not a film, but not on TV either.

On Netflix is a series called Cobra Kai, the Karate Kid in the present day. Daniel Larousso is now a successful business man who bumps into his old rival Johnny one day, and you can probably guess the rest.

A veritable cheese fest of flashbacks and dodgy rock music, I'm embarrassed to admit that I watched the whole first series over two nights.

Was expecting the Karate Kid to have a career as a CIA agent or pehaps an ex special forces operator unjustly imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. No, he is just a guy who used to go to Karate lessons and now sells cars.

They've even got rid of his likeable character and turned him into a bellend gobshite.

In the unlikely event I had to pick a favourite John Carpenter film, it would probably have to be this. Stylish, clever, relentless yet never feels rushed. A perfect piece of low budget film making.

The less said about the remake the better, though there is a French 'sort of' remake called The Nest which is excellent.
