There are other perfectly valid uses of the word. Which one are you objecting to?

Other valid uses are when you batter somebody, as in Assault and battery. Or the person batting in Cricket is the batter (some would argue only batsman is correct, but batter has been in regular use for many years now).

When some politician says, "we are in lockstep with..." Are their ankles cable tied to those of the other entity then?
When someone calls you "mate" when you've just bought something or paid for a service. I feel like telling them, "Oi!" "I'm not your mate!"
When someone a fraction of my age calls me "Buddy", as above.
When someone who ought to know better describes something as "a phenomena". It's a phenomenon! There are phenomena, which is plural, or there is a phenomenon, which is singular.

"We reached out" annoys me intensely. No, you bloody emailed/phoned/wrote a letter. Use that expression near me and I'll reach out with my right fist.

I also cant stand "bear with me" fo some reason.

And the lazy, pointless, stupid shortening of words make me want to start taking hostage, "merch" being the latest example to bring out my inner Norman Bates.

Reach out - is a much hated US import in my book.
