What does fridge gas smell like?

This morning there was a smell like gloss paint in my kitchen. There are some paint cans under the sink but they don't seem to be leaking.
The only other source I can think of is the gas from the fridge-freezer. It's fairly new so would use tetrafluoroethane rather than Freon. I've done a Google search and can only find out that this might have a 'chemical' smell, which doesn't help much.

I pierced our freezer with a screwdriver while trying to chip ice off once. The smell was quite odd. I'm tempted now to pierce my freezer just to remind me what it smells like.

The fridge is at 4 degrees and the freezer is below -20 so it can't have lost that much, if any.

If it's not like gloss paint then now all I've got to do is work out where the smell is coming from.

Any water / sewerage works in your area? We had a terrible solvent smell in our house a few months ago which turned out to be the adhesive they'd used to reline the drains.

No - but I heard my neighbour doing some DIY this afternoon, I'll see if he is somehow responsible.
