I use my cruiser bike almost every day for walking the dog. My other bikes all get used regularly and do more miles mostly just riding for the sake of it, apart from the Brompton.

I like to be using a bike to get somewhere, rather than just riding for the sake of it.

Completely the opposite here - I ride because I enjoy it - if it's a chore (e.g. commuting on cold wet winter days) I don't do t as it ceases to be fun!

I am with Chris here. Commuting and riding for enjoyment/fitness. I rarely use my bikes to go anywhere apart from my commute.

I'd count touring and (at a pinch) Audax as "riding to go somewhere". Then again, when I was fit I used to enjoy going out on a Sunday and doing 100+ miles, just for fun. But I do like to have a destination in mind, even if it's only a pub.;)

It's just struck me that I have only used bikes for actually 'getting somewhere' 6 times in 20 years!

My definition of 'getting somewhere' is when the object of the exercise is not just the exercise. An audax ride for instance, for me is exercise. It's exercise in nice surroundings, and probably involves stopping at cafes, but I wouldn't be going to the cafes otherwise.

My 6 trips were:

(1) A trip to local DIY supply store to buy some screws and nails. It was only a couple of miles, but I went on my then best bike - a Bianchi. I got shouted at for wheeling the bike into the warehouse and was told to leave it outside in case somebody 'tripped over it'. If they didn't trip over the lengths of guttering, copper pipes, ladders etc. why would they trip over a bike? I was a bit miffed, but rushed around the store and back to the till. I was looking out to see if my bike was still there (no lock) and the cashier asked what all the fuss was about, it was 'only' a bike. Yeah, a bike which cost me £2,000! He couldn't believe it when I told him how much it was worth...

(2), (3) Trips to a supermarket in Todmorden with my ex. She only rides the bike I gave her to get somewhere and never just for its own sake. I sat outside and guarded the bikes while she shopped. I insisted on going home by a longer scenic route.

(4), (5) I rode from Hebden Bridge to Coventry and back a week later. Round about 140 miles each way. I enjoyed the feeling of travelling good distances 'under my own steam'. Perhaps I'll give touring a go one day?

(6) I took a singlespeed bike down to Coventry by train, but I did ride it to and from the stations ;).

I ride 6-7 days a week - five commuting all weathers - good training, then weekends on the quick bikes......

Don't tend to do any utility stuff as I don't have a hack..the bikes would be a target.....they are all pretty good spec machines, although old.....!!

My commute is too far and for most of the local shopping there is too much risk of it not being there for the return ride.
Sometimes use it to go to B&Q and Screwfix as I can wheel the bike around with me.
