Having only really just got into this game I was wondering, what do the veterans take with them when they go out for a spin?

I have just been taking my phone and a banana, keeping it light. What is the smart thing to do?

Phone, debit crd, fiver, front door key - all but latter wrapped in film or resaealable plastic bag.
bananas good or energy bar, deepening on distance, fluid.
Depending on forecast - windproof jacket.

Don't know about smart, but I carry tyre levers, puncture repair outfit, 1 inner tube, house key, and a piece of cake if I'm going to be doing more than 50ks. And there's a mini-pump clipped to the frame of course.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
2 inner tubes,levers,pump,multi tool,chain breaker,gilet/windproof ,gel,energy bar,a £5 /£10 note,debit card,house keys,phone,1 or 2 water bottles depending on weather +distance.

I agree coffee joe, I was focussing just on emergency stuff and not seat bag stuff.
Seat bag = levers, tube, quick link, latex gloves, multi-tool, scabs, paracetamol, old store card (split tyre fix), card with emergency numbers.
For all-day rides I add 6" chain and splitter.

Check out some videos on changing tube/tyre (especially lever-free method), fixing a chain and adjusting gear indexing.

Depends on the length of the ride but, even heading into town, I'll have the phone, wallet, pump and tool kit (Leatherman, PRK, knife, Allen keys in a plastic container which sits in the bottle holder).

For longer rides, I'll also have camera, maps, tubes, gilet and arm-warmers.

I've got a RoadID tag on my wrist whenever I'm riding bikes or motorbikes.

Always in a saddle bag.. topeak multitool, spare tube, instant patches, co2 pump + tiny hand pump, spoke key, tyre levers, spare chain link. The bag goes on seatpost/saddle for any short ride, for long rides it goes into a Camelbak or rackpack.
Longer rides either Camelbak or one/two bottles on frame, energy snacks, sometimes a little radio or camera, extra layers as necessary

Always: Mobile, keys, cash.

Training ride (typically 1 hour ish): As above plus spare tube, tyre levers, pump - all fits in jersey pockets.

Long ride: As above plus saddle bag containing chain tool & quick link, multi-tool, puncture repair kit, very small lock (handy if you need a comfort break!), flapjacks.

Ooh, what lock do you have? I don't take my heavy d- and cable locks with me when I'm out on the road bike - a light lock would be handy in such circumstances

Something like this:

I paid about a fiver from Aldi/Lidl. No protection at all against anyone with tools or a decent pair of biceps, but it's so light you don't know you're carrying it and it's better than leaving your bike totally unprotected when you quickly nip into a shop (or behind a tree!).
