When off on the mountain bike the Camelback always has a set kit list with additions depending on the location and closeness to help.

Excluding clothing, food, water, phone/money etc. the basics would be:
Multitool
Chain tool if not included in the above
Small pliers/folding knife thing
Tubes
Pumps (inc shock pump)
Tyre levers
Tube patches
Tyre patches
Brake pads
Spares - inc power links, various nuts/bolts/fittings, gear cable
Zip ties
Safety - space blanket, first aid kit, whistle

Luckily over the years I've only need a few of these myself but have often used my stuff to get others off the hills and home.

Now the question. What do you recommend tacking for this road riding thing??
Obviously, tubes, levers and a pump. But what else and how best to carry it all?

Sorry to have more questions than answers.

for mtb, I don't bother with: shock pump, blanket, first aid kit, "various nuts/bolts/fixings", pliers/knife. but do take all the rest on your list, and if i'm going for more than a day's outing and sometimes even then i do just bung my whole toolbox in the back.

for road: saddlebag contains tyre levers, 2 tubes, and powerlinks if on normal roadie or track nut spanner if on the fixed.
mini pump and drinks bottle on frame.
waterproof jacket rolled up and stuffed in own little bag behind saddlebag.
normally tend to also carry phone and cash/cards in jersey pockets.

On the road bike I usually carry in my mini wedge saddle bag:
multi tool (with tire levers and chain tool),
p repair kit (spare links in there)
and keys.
On the frame: a water bottle
And on my person (jersey):
pump
spare tube
mobile
Gilet/waterproof or both !

and at this time of year I usually carry lights too stuffed in my saddle bag or jersey)

OccasionallyI have my cash card/ money / maps/ cereal bars/ small lock too.

OK thanks all. Seems that it's sensible to take enough (within reason) to get you home but not the full re-build and extreme survival kit taken off road.

That's too light, for me.

Or do you hide your bike in a hedge, walk to the nearest shop, buy a spare tube, walk back, use the allen keys as tyre levers, puncture the spare putting it on, hide the bike in a hedge, walk back to the shop...;)

Lately a spare pair of socks and sealskins unless I have sealskinz on already leaving the house. Nothing like going thru a few wet stretches of road, hoping it won't seep thru and having wet feet for hours. Some roads around here seem to permanently have torrents of water flooding down them no matter how dry the weather.
