OK, first of many daft newbie questions I suspect here but.... what do you take with you when you go for a ride, and how do you carry it ?

What do you take in terms of maintenance equipment, if any ?

Also, if you take a mobile phone, do you keep it in a bag or a zip pocket on your top ? I was looking at a bag in Decathlon today but wasn't sure if my Ipod touch would get a signal inside as I wanted to start using Strava to record my rides.

Topeak saddle wedge bag with a couple of spare tubes, tyre levers, pump, patches in case both tubes get used and since my chain broke, a spare link and chain tool. I don't think the ipod touch has gps does it??

I have a Topeak wedge under the saddle, and this has:

Spare inner tube
tyre levers
patches (glueless)
latex gloves
spare light batteries
Edit:- Forgot multi-tool and spare 'missing links'
Front door keys

In the jersey pockets I have

Hankerchief
Money
Foody stuff
Phone

I use a Garmin for the ride recording. I did use the phone when I was walking, and Strava worked fine with it in my pocket so maybe ok in a bag?

Well, I thought that until I tried it this morning. It seems to know where I am when I use the maps function and the Strava website says it works with Ipod Touch so I'm going to do a quick ten-miler tonight and see if it works.

SADDLE BAG
Two tubes,
Reliable pump (or on bike)
Tyre levers,
a few allen keys & philips screw, not a multitool (need a new one)
Chainlink remover
Patches if I really get unlucky.

@Mo1959 I dont even know what one of those are.
@Melv everything to fix the bike bar a chainset extractor and a cassette tool, I used to carry spokes, but touch wood, I only brake one about every year now compared with one a month. I should carry a brake and gear cable but never do, gears I could set to a get home setting.
So a multitool which fixes most things, as Mo says tubes, levers patches (though punctures are rare these days) pump, chaintool ect.. GPS unit, lights if the light is dodgy even in daytime always have a flapjack or two in the saddle bag (you never know), depending on weather leg/arm warmers, overshoes if rain likely ( I dont mind getting wet, but hate my feet overly wet, also helps keep shoes socks clean) again depending on time of year mits/gloves I have been caught out and either been to warm or cold, mudguards these hardly ever come off (to much of a faff) and Bacca.

Pretty well as everybody else takes, as little as possible, but always take whatever tool I used the night before for that last minute maintenance tweak. It's so easy to hit a pot hole and something comes loose or slips.

+ mobile phone as the ultimate fall back
And a Four Leaf clover, handed down from my dad.

iPod touch uses wi-fi to get a rough location - it has no GPS capability.

This is exactly what I thought. I just had a three mile walk in my lunch break and my Ipod told me it was receiving a GPS signal and Strava seemed to work fine.

From the Apple website:

For iPod touch with Maps, the Maps application provides your approximate location using information based on your proximity to known Wi-Fi networks (when on and available). The more accurate the available information, the smaller the circle identifying your position on the map. The feature is not available in all areas. Known Wi-Fi networks are predominantly in urban areas. In order to provide your location, data is collected in a form that does not personally identify you. If you do not want such data collected, do not enable the feature. Not enabling the feature will not impact the functionality of your iPod touch.

In my saddle pack I have a spare tube, tyre levers, patches, multi tool, asthma inhaler and my heart spray!

In my jersey pocket I have my phone, front door key, a bit of money and a couple of cereal bars.

Forgot to add I also have a mini pump on the bike.

Keys, cash, food and water aside, I take tools and patches in a tool-carrying bottle (elite byasi storage bottle) small pump strapped onto the frame, and a tube in a rear jersey pocket.

If I'm wandering/stopping, I'll wear a backpack containing a phone, d-lock and additional cable, the small pump and a couple of tubes, lights, jacket and additional food.

Still refining though...

This has been done to death, search the forum.
FWIW, I don't go in for carrying the kitchen sink but what I usually have is: a mini pump, spare tube, multi tool (with chain tool tyre levers) and a quick link. I usually carry a gilet but I might also carry more clothes (arm/ leg/knee warmers). A rear light is always hooked on to my saddle bag but I might carry more or extra depends on the ride time. Bottles and cereal bars/bananas may also be required.
My mobile phone always comes along for emergency and maybe photos, unless I forget it! The phone is in a phone case I got free with a mag, its not as thick as neoprene but its something in that familly.
