That's not the only volcano I've been to, but it's the only one where we needed breathing apparatus. Usually there's just ash clouds to contend with, or making sure you didn't stick your hand in the lava.

The lava-spewing one was Etna.
Molten rock bubbling out, about 11 000 feet up in the air, surrounded by a permanent snowfield. It was a fine balancing act between getting really cold from the snow, or too hot by half from the red hot runny rock...

I remember that episode, That was really quite scary...
There was a lot of sulphur vapour hanging around, and you really don't want to be breathing it.
If you like having your lungs in working order, anyhow.
That photo is inside the caldera of an active volcano - there's magma not far below where I was standing.

Wow, inside a volcano- how brilliant is that?!!! Very envious!

There used to be a sulphur mine inside that one.
Till there was an unexpected debris flow in 1914 that killed all 10 of the workers...
If you're ever in NZ I'd recommend a visit
