What do you listen to when working?

Me....I like Radio 6 Music which plays great music but something breaks my concentration every now and then.

I've been playing increasing amounts of music via Spotify and Youtube but maybe I should work with my CD collection to find some that work....

When you're sat at a PC what do you use to have something in the background to neutralise external noises and not affect your concentration - if anything, help it?

Occasional;ly have internet radio on, or quiet classical music on spotify, or (now) live BBC coverage of Egypt happenings 9not watching, unless it gets exciting). But mostly I find that as I get older, I can't concentrate with anything in background... also have to be away from PC from now til 5pm

I never listen to the radio at work. If I am at home doing DIY it is usually Planet Rock. I sometimes listen to Radio 6 also. I feel like dying if I ever have to listen to Radio 1 for any reason.

For music it's Dutch stations Arrow Classic Rock or Radio 10 Gold. The Dutch put UK music stations to shame. Sometimes it'll be Caroline. Otherwise, for talk it's R4 or 5Live.

I use Spotify on my HTC Desire when at work, listening to things like SugarComa, Metallica or NIN. Basically things that are going to keep me going on a 12 hour shift ;)

Radio Caroline still exists? Wasn't that the name of Radio 1 when it was a pirate station (or basically those DJ's went to fledgling radio 1; I forget)?

depends, sometimes itunes, sometimes spotify, sometimes radio 2. all streamed from my mac to my hifi...

That's a good point. My airtunes did that beautifully until it died 2years after I bought it - I wasn't going to spend £90 on another for it to do that again.

Anyone - Know how to stream from a PC (windows 7 machine) to a hi-fi? I have a Netgear G type router if that makes any difference.

Hi Fletch- yes Radio Caroline is still going and currently hoping to get a licence for an AM frequency. They're just on't'internet and Sky now. The station hasn't broadcast from the high seas since 1990 though they still have the ship, forlornly imprisoned in dock at Tilbury.

Radio 1 was the UK Government's derisory response to the demand for pop music on the radio after they outlawed offshore broadcasting from within the 12 mile limit in 1967. The other offshore stations like Radio London cow towed and closed down, but Caroline simply upped anchor to 12.1 miles out and continued, sticking two fingers up at the bastards in suits and bloody good thing too!

I grew up with offshore Caroline in the 80's and a thing called Laser558 - Radio 1 was always a pile of pathetic pants in comparison. Eventually, the UK and Dutch Governments starved the ships off the high seas via an illegal blockade and violent raid on Caroline in 89' (an act of piracy in itself, as it took place in international waters), introcuced increasingly absurd legislation until it was just impossible for the guys to carry on. I just can't bring myself to this day to listen to music on the radio unless it's crossed at least 12 miles of sea!

Radio Caroline

These days they play an eclectic mix of stuff which won't be to everyone's taste, but the presenters are volunteers who love their music and have encyclopedic knowledge of it. Plus they're not 'The Borg' (R1, 2, 6, Heart, Galaxy, Smooth, Yawn etc....)

I listen to the drone of my two remaining PC fans. There used to be a third (a case fan) which always irritated me but I disabled it when it got even louder. (I haven't had any problems with overheating so it was clearly redundant.)

I prefer to live and work in silence, but I do occasionally spend the odd hour or two on YouTube trawling through old music videos and discovering new ones that I like.

I play my iPod through an X-Mini II portable speaker. They only cost about £15, have a rechargeable battery that lasts freakishly long and the volume and sound quality is really impressive.

I can't really be bothered with music so instead listen to McAuley & Co (Fred MacAuley) on BBC Scotland in the mornings. I usually end up listening to music later in the day and switching the radio off because I'm fed up with the songs.
