Can I butt in? Is audax pronounced owdax, as in cow, or ordax, as in door.

That's why I hate them.I like sportives, they're fun if you don't take them too seriously. They're a bit like a challenging club run without the club etiquette and nuisance of a cafe/pub stop.

They're not all the same. I rode one earlier this year (Le Terrier) which was organised by Lancaster CC and profits went to charity. It was a fabulous event, run by enthusiastic volunteers, in beautiful countryside. The laid back atmosphere and small number of entrants made it a completely different experience to some of the big commercial events.

That's the stuff I hate.It was good, but I was riding mostly with local club members. In contrast, some of the riding in the bigger sportives I've done has been dreadful.
Oh I now do have a GPS – but am still crap at navigating and get lost just as much.Signed event is essential for me – no GPS and a crap sense of direction. Mind you I'm happy to pay £15 to £20 for a few frills – only the price of a cheapish meal out.
