I generally ride quite soon after breakfast, which is a mixture of cornflakes, all bran and a banana. If it's over about 20 degrees, I put nuun electrolyte tablets in my water, and if I'm going to be out more than 2 hours, I take something to eat, generally some kind of cake or a cereal bar. Otherwise, I just take plain water.

So does high5 give an effect like what you get from energy drinks like redbull? I know they are made from different ingredients, but at the end, both provide energy. So besides the ingredients, do the effects differ much?

No, far from it. High5 is an electrolyte. It's helps replace fluids and salts that you lose through sweating. It also help stave off cramp post ride.
Forget the RedBull stuff. That is only a quick fix caffeine high that you will suffer from greatly when it wears off.

It depends which High5 product you have. People just refer to High5 as High5 not realising that it is a whole line of various products

I use High5 Zero Berry Flavour, its purely for hydration and I can use it without worrying about calorie intake. Ive had free samples of their energy drinks too, which come in a big sachet and have a load of sugary stuff in them, seems pretty decent too.

I think RedBull is designed more for diluting vodka than for sports performance, Ive heard accounts of people drinking it trying to run a 1/2 or full marathon and it making them sick. IMHO if youre looking at popular energy drinks, Lucozade products tend to be designed for sport and actually used by professionals.

I have enough high5 stuff to make it look like I'm sponsored by them lol

For me just water in the camelbak and powerbars for energy, works for all rides over 40 miles. I've found if the ride is under 2 hours I don't need to carry any extra food.

Yesterday for a 50 miler mountain bike ride starting at 6am that meant a powerbar as I was leaving the house (no breakfast), another bar 10 miles in and the last one at about the 40 mile mark. I went through the 3 litres of water in my camelbak in about 2.5 hours and had to find somewhere to fill up to finish the ride. When I started the ride it was cloudy and about 80f and when I finished sunny and about 90f.

I use SIS go, just checked the label and it looks like a carbohydrate boosting drink ( enquiry to all the high 5 users... is it better than the SIS ? )
Always cornflakes and an apple or banana before setting off
Sometimes take a flapjack or biscuits and usually stop for a buttie somewhere
If its a nice weekend I put a picnic in the rackpack with a radio then ride to somewhere nice and listen to the footy while I'm scoffing... not a great workout but a lovely way to spend an afternoon !!

The SIS doesn't have any electrolyte content but 3g more carbs (99g per 100g) than High5 2:1 and is cleaper as a result (going by the closest comparable sizes of tub on crc)

Better is subjective to your own requirement.
