Pick the flattest route you can around teh area. Hills make thinsg a lot more difficult.
Assuming that, and with you being in your twenties and reasonably fit then I would have thought you would be able to manage considerably more than 15 miles.
Take its steady and you may be surprised how far you can go. I suppose it makes sense to try a few loops as discussed above, that way if you feel you are done in then it isn't too far to go home.
I would have thought most people can go for a couple f fhours before getting tired. In that case you are probably looking at 20 - 25 miles.
