Focus Mares AX1.0 HERE. Got mine for £967.99 with my discount, or they have an ex-demo available in large for £879.99 HERE

[EDIT] If you want value for money, nothing can touch the Focus. The Scott CX in the same price bracket only has Tiagra

Anyway, have you robbed a bank this week Gaz? First the Dogma, (still awaiting pics though), now a winter bike for nearly a bag of sand?

Dogma = Being run over for

Winter bike is C2W so its not real money

Ah! Think I'll stick to 0% rather than get run over, not like you had a choice mind

As for C2W, I wish my employer would do it but they just don't want to get involved. Mind you if they did I'd probably need a bigger house/garage/shed

As for the Mares, it's a great bike. Full Ultegra, (lesser gruppos are available). When I first got it I was going everywhere with the Nobbly Nics on, so I decided to stick some Marathon Plus's on it to stop me going MTB bothering off road  It's now fitted with a pair of Halo Aerorage wheels as I used the DT's for another bike

My first Cyclocross bike was an of fthe peg Giant, can't remember exactly which model but was about £700 about a year back. Over time I upgraded the bike including new fulcrum wheels and switched the full group set over to Campag. Once I got the cross bug I paid a visit to Rock N Road cycles in Southampton and ordered a full steel Gunnar Crosshairs - hand made in US. Cycling Plus did a report on this bike late 2010 which got me interested and was the reason for visiting this particular bike shop. Bike is an absulute dream to ride, so much so that my poor Colnago Master is feeling neglected, just can't stop riding the cross.

Frame and forks came to just under £800 so not exactly a cheap option but well worth the cost, I simply swapped all the goodies over from the old Giant.

I have just bought a CX bike.

Mine is a Giant TCX-1. Beautiful bike in striking black/red/white, extremely light and has a full Shimano 105 group set.

In my hunt across the bike shops and forums, I narrowed it down to the following:

Kineses Crosslight 5T - good selection of components assembled around an excellent frame

Fuji Cross 3.0 - good value for money Tiagra based bike with a discrete sprinking of 105

For a little bit more, these are meant to be good bikes:

Specialized Tricross Sport - One of the more popular CX bikes on the market

Fuji Cross 2.0 - excellent value for money from a known make with 105 groupset and Ultegra rear derailleur upgrade

Kona Jake the Snake - legendary CX bike. Extremely popular on the CX competition scene in years gone by.

If your C2W is Halfords, I've just bought the Boardman Team CX. It's very nice. Front guard looks a little high because of the clearance, but I'm sure I can tinker with it. The SRAM Apex gruppo is superb.

Hummm really ? Talk to me dude

Weeell - you'll tend to see tourers with less aggressive geometry than CX, lower bbs - perhaps more suited to mile munching on the road. You'll get scads of braze ons. Clearances can vary, but my LHT will take 45c tyres. WITH MUDGUARDS.

Gives you something a bit different to your racing bikes in feel, with the possibility of touring in comfort if that's something you fancy doing later.

Thanks for that, now forgive me, for I always thought a tourer was for the older generation

But I suppose, less aggression, marathon winters , it would make more sense than a cyclo-x for the frozen tundra canal commute

If your in and around Manchester then yes please

I have C2W at work just started - have to decide by July 22nd. I'm considering the Boardman CX. The plan would be to get another set of wheels as well - and keep one with 23c road tyres on and the other with nobblies for off road shenanigans. Trouble is, I already have 4 bikes (bought one this week) and running out of space, partner's patience etc

Righto - how are you fixed at lunchtimes? If you can make it up to the University end of town, I'll be working there next week (but not Friday) & will have arrived on the Trucker - feel free to fire off a pm & let me know.
