If you can, get a towbar-mounted cycle carrier.
Good Advice - the tow bar may not be cheap but having used roof mounted, 'clip onto the tailgate' and now a tow ball clamp on - I'd say this is the most stable type. Recommend the Thule 902/3 as they fold up which makes storage easier. We bought our after seeing that most people in Holland seem to use them.

Towequipe in Nuneaton often have good deals on-line.

sdg.

Yup  It's a solid bit of kit which doesn't fold up for easy garage storage but otherwise a great deal

It's a great bit of kit. Ours has literally carried bikes safely for thousands of miles.

I started with a boot mounted rack for our 2 Mountain bikes and got fed up with the lifting (I'm 71 yrs old lol),the marks on the bikes, the marks on the boot and the fact that to get into the boot I had to remove the bikes.
I now have a Thule 904 which is towhook mounted and tilts to allow boot access, vital when on a cycling and wine buying trip in France.
Yes,it was expensive-but money well spent.

I recently bough a towball mounted 3-bike carrier that locks on to the ball and can be tilted down (but doesn't hit the ground ) to enable access to the boot/tailgate - if I had a tail gate, which I don't - as I have a LR Disco, with a very large rear door !

Got it from Roofbox Co, in their sale - half price and the 3rd bike carrier cost 1p - really

Just need to remember not to reverse too close .....

Scoosh, which carrier was it?
