I know of people with very little, really struggling. Criminality wouldn't even come near their thinking. It wouldn't cross their mind. Living in damp and mouldy flat that they're still struggling to afford. They're exposed to criminality every day due to where they live and where they work (employer doesn't discriminate against ex prisoners and some of them are back at it as well as working).

Seriously while life prospects might be a factor it's never the whole story. Nothing is going to be that simple.

Yep. Many people have nothing but don't resort to crime. But on the whole, the worse off people are, both in what they have and the opportunities they can get, the more likely they are to be involved in crime.

Nah, by 'upbringing' I don't mean just the parents but the whole environment. The "Don't talk to the bizzies" attitude is prevalent in many areas but then again the 'boys in blue' don't really inspire much confidence/trust in those areas.

Upbringing usually does mean the immediate family.
The whole environment is more social and peer pressure rather than upbringing

Many years ago there was a study done on twins who had been brought up separately, to try to gauge the relatives effects of nurture and nature. The two I remember seemed to confirm the nature theory - one was a policeman, the other a burglar.

There’ a not much difference between the poacher and the gamekeeper.

The more likely they are to be caught, not necessarily the more likely they are to be involved in crime.

Why people offered is complex , it's a whole area of social science in it's own right. One reason why in youth offending you do a 40 page risk of reoffending assessment. Key to breaking the cycle of offending is targeted early intervention. It's not cheep but way cheeper than the alternatives and the bigger effects on wider society. What's more it shown to work.

If anyone is interested here is an update on my friend who had her phone stolen by a girl she invited to her house.
It's an iPhone so she tracked it and managed to find out the number of the replacement SIM. Apparently the thief is a dispenser of sexual services, a tart without a heart in this case, so she set an elaborate trap to make her believe that a German man coming to Accra required her services (don't ask me how) and arranged a meeting at a hotel. When the thief arrived with the phone my friend was there waiting with the police.
Long story short she's now in police custody.

Unfortunately the corruption still continues and the police are asking for money for the arrest.
I was waiting for that punchline!

Immoral people, including corrupt cops...

I know someone who was stitched up in Morocco, arrested for possession of hashish, and chucked into a stinking cockroach-infested dungeon!

He had booked into a hostel. The guy on the reception desk looked around in a shifty fashion and said "Sir, you want buy hashish?" My acquaintance asked how much and was offered half a housebrick size for the equivalent of about £10. He thought he would smoke what he could while he was there and try to sell what was left before coming home. He decided to take his stash outside and roll a fat one but he didn't get the chance ... A police car came screeching up and armed police leapt out and arrested him for possession. One of them took the hash back into the hostel, presumably so the sting could be run again with the next victim!

He was banged up in the aforementioned dungeon along with about 10 other mugs from various parts of Europe until the money required to bribe his way out was wired over from the UK!
