Seems to be a good place to admit to my car collection.:shy: I currently have 3 which are a Suzuki Vitara, an Austin Mini and my E-type Morris Eight.

The Mini and the Eight aren't currently running though and I don't do much mileage in the Vitara (coz I can't afford any petrol) so I'm not really the demon motorist I might appear.

Boring but functional, and surprisingly quick and economical. Also one of the most comfortable driving positions of any car I have driven (and there has been quite a lot)...... Toyota Corolla 1600 VVTi. Sadly, it might be getting sold soon if the work situation doesn't improve .

My one indulgence, bought during the good old days when I actually had a job:

Mine's an R reg Astra 1.4.

Not the most exciting car I've owned but reliable and practical for my job. When I retire I've promised myself an MX5, it's the nearest thing to a Lotus Elan you can get with the advantage that it doesn't disintegrate before your eyes.

I've just placed an order for a Skoda Octavia Estate, the 1.8 petrol. I sat down and worked out it that the diesel wouldn't save me any money until at least 50,000 miles at current prices, so I'd rather the up front two grand saving.

Focus.

Bog standard, cheap to run, nothing ever goes wrong, and when anything wears out it costs pence to replace.

I sold my most treasured vehicle last year, Toyota Hilux Surf. Superb 4x4, full snorkel, uprated suspension, would pull 2.5 tonnes with ease. The only time she ever got stuck was when she slipped into some ruts deeper than her tyres, so her wheels weren't touching the ground (got pulled out be another Surf), her engine was so old she'd run on full bio-fuel without modification.

Now I run a bog standard 2005 Mondeo estate, with 190,000 miles on the clock.

I drive 3 cars. A heavily modified Alfa 159 SportsWaggon 2.4 JTDm Q4, it's a road going cruise missile which has a chronic addiction to hypermiling especially when shown a nice long stretch of French autoroute. A really nice & accomplished car to drive but you've got to be careful though; except for how quickly the scenery is passing it's hard to tell the difference between 30 & 130mph. I also own a Lotus Exige & a rally preped Fiat 'cento, both of these do very few miles a year & most of those miles are done off road.

When choosing the current car we considered practicality (estate, mpv, hatchback) economy, running costs, economy (diesels). Looked at the likes of Picassos, zafiras, focus, etc.

Then test drove an Alfa 156 and bought that.
Theres actually a chance it will break 500 miles so far this year before the end of this month.
I don't quite know, one of those things that I just can't exactly explain. It genuinely puzzles me how the vast majority of the population is so obsessed with cars, the way so many people are so willing to spend so much money on something they probably don't entirely need. There are plenty of people who are probably spending many thousands per annum just to to show off to others. Its bonkers, and I well pleased with myself for never being lured into that madness.

I suppose my argument sort of fails in that there are plenty of cheap excellent value second hand cars. For what ever reason i seem to be at my happiest being the stereotypical WVM.^_^
